Kickoff Party: BYOB Wine Exchange, Fall 2014

Who: Everyone! SWS members and non-members, friends and guests-- anyone in the Stanford community who wants to come. (As long as you're 21 or over, of course.)

When: Thursday, October 2, 2014; 6:30-9:30pm. Feel free to come anytime-- but the earlier you arrive, the more chance you'll have to taste wine and to share your wine with others.

Where: the Atrium at Lyman Graduate Residence

Why: To start off a year of great wine tasting and wine learning together. If you're curious about our club, this is a great time to come meet us, find out about our activities, and taste an amazing variety of wines. While you're at it, you'll have a chance to sign up for membership and pay dues on the spot.

What do do ahead of time: RSVP online. We certainly won't turn you away if you haven't signed up, but if you know you're coming we'd really appreciate it if you'd tell us, so that we'll know how much food to get.

What to bring:

  • a bottle of wine. Any sort-- white, red, bubbly, dessert-y, whatever. It can be something you love and want to share with others, or something you've never tried before and are eager to open. If you really don't know anything about wine at all, this is a great chance to pick up a new bit of knowledge from the guy at the wine store or a friend who has a recommendation. We suggest staying within a $5-20 price range.
Note: if you're coming in a small group of 2-3 people, it's okay to bring just 1 bottle for the group of you (because a bottle of wine per person would be a lot of wine!). If you're all chipping in, you're welcome to spend slightly more on the bottle than you otherwise would (but don't feel it's necessary!).
  • a wine glass
  • your ID (we're required to check that you're 21 or over)
  • friends!

What to expect:

  1. When you arrive, we'll take your bottle from you and put it in a numbered bag so that nobody knows what it is.
  2. Take your glass and get a taste of any of the wines that are there! We (the SWS exec) will pour the wines.
  3. Think a bit about what you're drinking; talk with your friends about what you're drinking; meet people you don't know and talk about topics other than wine. Fill out a few tasting notes on each of the wines you drink-- if you feel like it.
  4. Have a bite to eat.
  5. Repeat steps 2-4 as often as you wish.
  6. When the evening is over, we'll accumulate everyone's opinions, reveal the wines, and if there were successful guesses at identifying wines, we'll reveal those too! Afterward, we'll publish all the notes we gathered on the wines you drank, in case you want to remember which ones you particularly did and didn't like.
